National book tour kicks off at St. Clair Winery

Author Eric Shonkwiler will have a reading and book signing of his latest work at 3 p.m. on Saturday at the St. Clair Winery and Tasting Room, 1325 De Baca Road SE in Deming.

A local author, Shonkwiler’s debut novel, Above All Men, was released earlier this year from MG Press. He will be reading from his critically acclaimed work at St. Clair Winery. The reading is free, and Eric will have books available for purchase and signing.

Above All Men is a novel about a farmer with PTSD struggling to keep his family and farm together in the wake of a near-future economic collapse and in the face of Steinbeckian dust storms, murder, and lawlessness unseen since the Wild West.

The book was chosen as a 2014 Midwest Connections Pick by the Midwest Independent Booksellers Association, and has been called “sparse and poetic” (Frank Bill, author of Donnybrook), “stark and plainspokenly honest” (Sundog Lit), “impossible to ignore” (Foreword Reviews) and has been said to “weave a compelling narrative together with tightly written prose that makes the realities of the post-collapse society profoundly acute” (Chicago Center for Literature & Photography).

Shonkwiler has had writing appear in Los Angeles Review of Books, The Millions, Fiddleblack, [PANK] Magazine, Midwestern Gothic, and elsewhere. He received his MFA in Fiction from University of California–Riverside, where he was the recipient of the Chancellor’s Distinguished Fellowship Award, and has formerly served as Regional Editor for Los Angeles Review of Books, a fiction reader for [PANK], and Editor-in-Chief for CRATE: The Literary Journal of UCR.

Born and raised in Ohio, Shonkwiler has lived and worked in every contiguous U.S. time zone and finds himself on the road as often as not. He is currently residing in Deming, and will be embarking on a 35-stop national book tour in September.

St. Clair Winery is New Mexico’s largest winery, featuring a vast selection of award-winning wines available seven days a week. St. Clair Winery & Tasting Room will feature two complimentary wine tastings per person, or six tastes for $6. Complimentary pretzels, chips, and salsa are offered, and other light snacks and cheese plates are available for purchase.”
