Hope you are enjoying UCR. Glad you got to meet Susan. She is one of my favorite professors I've ever had. Every time I see her she had some new book she wants me to read. People never believe me when I tell them she is really funny, they are always like "but her writing is so sad."

Kristan: Thanks for the kind words. Really good to hear from time to time, as I'm sure you know. Never gets old hearing yourself compared to the greats.

Sebastian: One of the more recent pieces, "Rooming With Your Bones" is very good, as is "Camp Green Cove for Girls."

I've done crazy things for love before. I suspect I will again.

Nico: I have no lit classes at the moment, and all the lit-heavy classes are out of the department. We're required to take an English course and a Comp Lit course while we're here, but I haven't seen anything that's caught my eye yet. I'll be sure to let you know, though. I know at least one other person who's curious.

Poet: I'm glad you found me. I'm reading through your backlog now. Glad I'll be sticking with you.

Stumbled across your blog... somehow. Probably got myself lost in a series of links.

Loving your writing. I know bits of this post are going to haunt me for a long time.

Powell's is incredible -- I think there's an entire section of Cambridge published classics in one shelf that is always fully stocked. I was also able to get a compendium of the complete works of Poe in hardcover for $6. Incredible.

I was also kinda wondering what your lit classes are like; kind of assumed that there would be stylistic disagreements but if I were you I'd err on the side of tone since that's your strong point from what I've read from the Amazon excerpt. After all, the rule is show, don't tell, right?

Ooh, awesome! I had a brief look at the writers there. Interesting-lookin' types. Didn't read any yet... should I? Maybe pick one out for me...

Portland's an awfully long way to go for afternoon tea and some music. That's much further than from me to the northern-most point of Scotland.

Crazy Americans.

Congratulations on the forthcoming publication!! That's so beyond fabulous.

Sounds like you had a nice roadtrip, despite things.

And yeah, I miss the workshop environment. Sure it has its flaws, but what doesn't?

Also, I hate to say but I agree that dialogue isn't intended to recreate reality as exactly as possible. Too many um's and like's that way. (That's a half joke, but only half.) That said, I remember reading your Amazon excerpt and seeing the strength and masculinity in your writing. Your voice reminded me of some of the old greats, like Robert Penn Warren and Steinbeck, and others that I can't remember because I have a shitty memory. I would imagine your work would standout because of that. It certainly did to me.
